About the designer
Lesley-Ann
Noel studied industrial design in Brazil at undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. She has had two successful furniture exhibitions
in Trinidad, "Amerindian Heritage" at Kisskadee Cultural
Laboratory, in 2000, and- "Galera and other interesting
People" - in 2001 at Caribbean Contemporary Arts (CCA7). She has
also exhibited work at the Biennale International Design 2000 in St.
Étienne, France and in exhibitions in Trinidad, Miami, Jamaica and
Barbados. In 2000 she was one of 24 participants at the Big River2
workshop at Grande Riviere, Trinidad.

Her
research as a furniture designer has taken her to the Amazon region in
Brazil, Guyana and Suriname several times to examine the design and
manufacturing possibilities of rainforest raw materials. In 1999, Ms.
Noel received an Honourable Mention in the Brazilian National Award for
Furniture and Design, an eco-design competition promoting renewable
Amazon resources.

She
has published articles on design in the Amazon and on the Caribbean
participation at the Biennale Internationale Design 2000, in
"Blacklines of Architecture" magazine. She has also
collaborated with other writers on articles for the Caribbean Export
News. Ms. Noel is a part-time lecturer in Design and Portuguese at the
University of the West Indies, where she is also reading for an M. Phil
in Cultural Studies, on the development of handicraft in Trinidad.
